Makin' Time with Sam Bailey
So, another quick update:
Right now, I'm hitting the three-quarter mark on the rough draft of Sam Bailey, and I can see that this script is going to need a lot of revisions. At the same time, this stands to be something very, very cool. In a lot of ways, it's reminding me a lot of Quentin Tarantino, where the dialog is all about turning decisions over, or hiding intent, or mulling things over... I've never really written anything this removed from extreme urgency, and it's kind of nice. Not every character motivation needs to be urgent, so long as they are strong. Most of my characters don't have the luxury of time. Sam definitely does.
In a way, I suppose, it also reminds me of the Big Lebowski, although it's very different from anything the Coen Brothers or Tarantino have ever done. We'll see how the rough draft shapes up, and how I polish it over time, but I think this movie might be a neat opportunity for some really fantastic character work.
In the meantime, my hope is that I'll be getting some good screenwriting work off of St. Augustine's Ice or Digit in the next few weeks, and I'm going to see about finishing this draft and making myself mentally available for new opportunities. This is my second rough draft in the last two months! This year, it's my third or fourth, depending on when I wrote Receiver. Pretty good, if I do say so myself!
