The Future of St. Augustine's Ice

This year has definitely been one for spring cleaning.

Since I started writing screenplays, I've been living with the story of St. Augustine's Ice.  Originally, it was meant to be a low budget stepping stone to Restorer that I could sink my teeth into dramatically, and as many of you know I found a truly beautiful, painful story about the power and the price of faith.

Since my last draft over two years ago, I've decided to simplify the story, remove any external threats, and focus exclusively on this family and their plight.  In some ways this is going to involve some tricky problem-solving, and in some ways it's going to make some of the plot elements all the more human and chilling.  Now, it's time for me to dive back in.

At the same time, the last several years have yielded some much more cost-effective, much more personal stories.  The more I think about it, the more a story with Catholic themes set in space seems like the kind of thing that studios and independent producers will see the originality in.  When they talk about how fantastic, original stories will always sell, it may be SAI that they're talking about.

For both of these reasons, the next several rewrites will be gearing the script up for sale.

This may come as a surprise to those who follow my creative process, but my cast of actors has changed since I envisioned the script, and as I mentioned, there's a great deal more to be gleaned personally from films like Receiver, Eclipse, and Heartsgaard.  Selling my one great outer space story does sting a bit, but I have faith that more will come.  Besides, there's always SkyChasers.

So there it is!  I've done quite a lot today, and it might be time for a movie and bed.  Tomorrow, after my Sunday job listings are handled, I'll take a fresh look at St. Augustine's Ice.
