Halfway to Heartsgaard

My hope was that I'd use this Saturday to blow through any job leads that needed attending, and Saturday evening through Sunday, I'd knock out the full second act of Heartsgaard.

Life, they say, is what happens while you're making other plans!

Saturday, as planned, I busted leads to call on Monday and Tuesday.

Saturday night, I gimped my exhausted brain into a theater to see Wall-E...  You already know you love it.  It's Andrew Stanton, the director of Finding Nemo, and some of the brightest minds in the industry.  If you could somehow inject Charlie Chaplin into Logan's Run, and then fire the resulting footage off into space, my friend, you'd have Wall-E.  If you don't like it, check the mirror.  You're probably a congressman, and don't even realize it.

Today, I awoke to find a fresh edition of the UTA Job List in my e-mail - fortune of fortunes!  For the morning, I ate an avocado and digested the information on the list, sending out as many cover letters as I could.  One advertisement, actually, was from a former agent at ICM who's opening a management company...  Entrepreneurism, and that broad view of the industry that I need!  Perfect!  I sent in a resume, and I'm thinking I should just show up Monday morning.  Stir things up.

After some chocolate covered cashews, I finally dived into Heartsgaard.  While I didn't write the 45 pages I hoped to, I did clear about 15, all the way to the midpoint.  What I'm getting from this film is that it could be shot on literally ANY budget.  If I don't see big script movement before my film equity clears, I may take a flight to Boston and shoot it on a super micro-budget.  It's time I shot something, and this script, once it's polished, is going to be an actor's showcase.  What I'm getting now is good.  Polished, it should be something very unique, very quirky, and a lot of fun.  I really could pile all my favorite folks on a plane for cheap, and we can bunk in with friends while we steal locations.  It's that kind of script, and it's fun enough to be worth it.  Done carefully, it could be a very, very special film.

As an addendum, I took my first real steps without my boot today.  My foot seems to be capable of supporting my weight, although I need to be careful about how that weight is distributed.  Nevertheless, a landmark in my healing process.  These days, I'm swimming at least every other day, and I spent some good time in the pool both days this weekend.

So begins my week of hustle for work, and a new page in the career of a filmmaker!  Wish me luck, and I'll keep you updated.
