Oh Captain, my Captain!
Riding home with one of my coworkers tonight, sharing stories of where we both came from, I found myself once again surprised by how many folks in my life don't know I was a boarding student at Phillips Andover Academy.
While I have many fine memories of growing up with my family in Massachusetts and California, when I think of the places I feel most at home, it's my Dining Commons, the Merrimack River where I used to row, Stuart Hall where I lived my senior year (and where my coolest friends lived when I was younger,) the lawns, the common rooms of Cluster Deans where we'd all watch movies on weekend evenings, and the Steinbeck Lobby, which my friends referred to simply as "The End."
And, of course, the Steinbeck and Tang theaters.
And the costume shop where Jodi practically lived.
And the art workshop where I did my stonework.
And this one spot in the graveyard where I used to lie for hours and stare at the sky, and sort out my confused teenage life.
And King's Subs, with the surly owner who always took care of me and Orion. He used to send us food when we hadn't ordered in a while. He knew we were working jobs during holidays, and he worried when we ran out of money.
That's home, to me. I'll make another home for myself, just as sacred as Andover - a quiet, loving place for exploration and creativity and sharing.
In the meantime, if you want to see this miraculous place for yourself, check out www.andover.edu. Our current headmaster, Barbara Landis Chase, was hired just before my upper (junior) year. I've known her half of my life.
Whenever money comes into my life, Andover always gets some. If you're looking for a charity that means something, donations can be made here.
This year, Andover achieved true needs-blind admission. Without any consideration for money or demographic, Andover takes in and nurtures the most exceptional students that apply. I'm proud and grateful to have been one of them.
That's what home means. Blind, unconditional nurturing. As I model my adult home in Andover's image, I'll allow my success and love to spill over into the lives of those who come after me. In a way, they are my family too.
