Out of the Shadows
This is just a brief announcement - over the last few weeks, I've seen everything I need to see to believe that Cheap Noir is a film I can produce the way I've always intended. With the collaborations behind it renewed and strong, and with some new story ideas that will both enrich and simplify things in ways I haven't begun to calculate, I'm bringing it back to the 8 Slate.
With Cheap Noir out of my catalog of specs for sale, the only scripts I'm letting go of are the high-concept stories with strong archetyping, easy branding, and enough conceptual built-in recognition to allow audiences and producers access to the story through a poster or a tagline. These are great stories, well told and richly layered. The surprise and the fight in these stories is right there on the page, and production should be straightforward and fun.
Oddly, that doesn't appeal to me as a director... I love fun, and at the same time I want the creative surprises and fight to keep on coming. I want to read my script differently each time I pick it up. I think it's always been clear to me which of these two groups Cheap Noir falls into. This decision has taken me many steps along the way, and I'm finally happy with the outcome.
