State of the Eight
My stated mission in creating this blog was to have a place for people to keep up with all the things going on in my professional life - it seems like whenever someone asks what's going on, I have about a million answers. Hopefully, this will make things easier for those that ctually want to know.
With that in mind, I should probably say a word or two on where my films actually stand!
Right now I'm collecting notes on the 4th draft of Receiver, a film I began writing right after Christmas, 2007. For years I've worked in film finance, and this year I'll be seeing the first real rewards as a film called Bob Funk premiers at the Cannes Film Market. Likewise, a film I wrote for in 2006 called XII is prepping for a premiere and sales at the festival. I've seen both films move through production and post, and both are outstanding examples of what is possible in independent cinema. Both filmmakers have achieved something very special, and I'm very pleased with what my work has yielded. My own returns will likely be enough to launch a microbudget feature on, and the relationships I've earned in my finance work give me the ability to make that film into something of real production value. Time to get writing, and so I have.
Receiver is a science-fiction story about a boy named Andy MacAuland, who finds his way to the next stage of human evolution with the help of a very special friend named Walter. News of Andy's gifts spreads to the National Security Agency, and Andy is taken from his family for research and containment. When Andy's transformation threatens all the things Andy's captors serve and protect, ten-year-old Andy is caught in a race between hope and fear, with humanity's future hanging in the balance.
It's a fantastic project, and I know where the money is coming from. I can begin pre-production in June, barring unforseen opportunities.
On the other hand, my short film Farther idles in post, waiting for the post-production workload to ease up. I expect to submit to Fantastic Fest in Austin, and hope to make that my premiere. I love the people that run the festival, it's extremely well attended, the themes and aesthetics are very much in line with the film, and it sound like a heck of a good time.
Meanwhile, I'm digging into a new spec script, continuing my finance work, and will hopefully be seeing some very exciting developments in the near future, independently of Receiver or Farther. More on that as it develops...
In the meantime, if you're open to offering me notes on Receiver, now's the time! Please let me know and I'll forward a PDF.
